thankful for – thanksgiving :: sewing/creative plans

26 Nov

this year is almost over. I am thankful for all the wonderful things that have been going on in my life along with the not so wonderful. I am thankful for sewing, an outlet that I desperately wanted to try out. Just thankful that I am alive, healthier and happier this year than in previous years.

on another happy note, I will be starting up sewing again. I started up and almost finished a top but then was side tracked. My friend Leyli and will be meeting up on Friday for some fun sewing projects. We are trying to get back our creative nights again.

ceramics classes will be ending in about a month and there will be about a month of limited studio access so I will be able to take time on Saturdays and dedicate it to sewing. YAY. I miss it. I started to cut out the pattern for my next project. I have been losing weight so I am able to cut them to a smaller size. WOO HOO.

no telling when I will get photos up. I am borrowing my parents computer since mine has crashed. BOO. But I did get a copy of the full Adobe suite so I will be able to store it on there when I get my computer back.

have a great turkey day!!

sewing again

4 Nov

I started to sew again last night. It has been well over a month since the last time I touched my sewing machine. I decided to finish up my white top. I still need to add buttons and elastic. Cut bias tape and add to the sleeves. I think I did something wrong but whatever. It still works and it’s super cute. I tried it one last night and loved it. It will look so good with dark jeans. OH, i also have to tact the inner collar piece. I hate those things. I know they are needed but they are just a big pain in the ass.

I don’t know when i will ever post images of the finished items. I know I am such a slacker. haha. Work and my other creative outlet of creating ceramic vessels have gotten in the way.

Tonight I will be cutting out another pattern to start. Not sure what I will make this time. Probably another top.

On another not. I found Mood, the fabric store that the designers go to in project runway. This one is in L.A. I wasn’t even looking for it. Joey and I went to a hugge art store called PEARL on La Cienega. As we were walking to the car, I saw the familiar logo. I said to Joey ” we are going there (pointing to the store) now” It was just across the way from us. Unfortunately, it was sunday and they were closed. BOO. I will have to go some other time.

Will try to update again soon.

freaking buttonhole foot

13 Oct

I bought a set of different feet for my machine since mine only came with two (zig zag and zipper/cord foot). I was excited to try out the buttonhole foot but I don’t know how to use it. It’s not the automatic one where you just put the button on it and it automatically makes does it in one step. I have the one that you use for 4 steps but I don’t know where the hell the thing is for doing steps 1-4. I am assuming it is inside since there is a lever that says 1 -4. I don’t know. I am so disappointed. I wanted to play around with it.

I did however play with the other feet. Need more practice though. Think that I will take another 4 sessions with Sha next month and bring my machine with me or just take one session for a foot tutorial. I am thinking of just buying the automatic buttonhole foot online. Boo.

Random update

7 Oct

Full version of banner. Was so glad that the photographer let me use the image. will also be used on my new widget.

Haven’t sewn since I got back from Atlantic City. Going on 2 weeks. Need to get back into the swing of things.

Just purchased foot pressers for my machine (11 total including a button hot attachment) and cloth that matches my sewing box. I want to make little baskets and things with this. Bought 1 yard at a ridiculously high price. Kinda dumb but oh well. I will use it sparingly.

Not much else.

ebay purchase

15 Sep

I totally forgot I that I won this last week. Was surprised when I went into work today and there it was.

I loved that it is in black and white. Had been looking for a sewing pattern for several weeks now. I only found colorful ones that were a bit too country kitchen style for me. This is more my style, cute and simple.

This would be perfect as a cover for a small sketch book or porfolio. Too bad I didn’t read correctly and only purchased 1/2 yard. Might buy more not sure though.

f and s adventure.

15 Sep

I’ve been wanting to go to F & S for some time now. Not to buy anything, but to see what fabrics they had. Most of the times I wanted to go, I tried to plan my little adventure over there but never found the time or I was just not in the mood to go. So yesterday (Sunday) Joey and I were just out and about in Glendale looking at random places and eating at my favorite little taco stand (El Sauz, best Al Pastor and Asada taco at great prices), when we found ourselves not knowing what to do. We were going to check out the Americana but thought it might be to crowded. Joey is a bit weird when it comes to very crowded places.

We are in the car driving back home when I noticed it was still very early and I would have time to finally check out F & S. I called 411 and got a accounting firm at first. The second time I called I got the right #. The lady I spoke to was a bit of a ditz when I asked for directions so I quickly hung up and started to drive. 15 minutes later we were there. F & S has 4 stores. 3 of them are for home decorating. We of course went to the wrong store first.

When we got there, we were nicely greeted by a sales associate. I was very excited to look around but being with Joey, I knew I would be on a time frame. Not that he would be pressuring me to leave, more on the note that I don’t like someone following me around every where I go when I am shopping. There are 5 rooms of fabric. The main room being split up between notions and trims and fabrics. I knew this place had the very high end fabrics so I was not going to buy anything unless it was on sale. No such luck. I just browsed, there were only a few that really caught my eye.

As I was making my way back to the main room, I passed a bin of dollar patterns. I pick out 3 (two skirts and one jacket pattern) and made my way to the notions section. Picked up a bodkin at only 1.50 and pair of black button with chinese characters in shell. Besides their everyday sewing notions, F & S is pretty expensive. As we walked back to the car I said to Joey “I will not be buying fabric here until I feel that I am better in my sewing skills”. he agreed. I then noticed a store that had a huge sign saying fabric. I wanted to go but thought against it not knowing if it really was worth the trip over. I decided to drive by to get a better look anyway. Boy was a glad that I did.

When we walked in I noticed some really lovely silks for sales at great prices $6.99 a yard. I qucikly started to look over the entire store. In the back, there were some really lovely prints. Joey encouraged me to purchase some yardage. I’m not used to paying for something over $8 a yard so I thought, “I guess I can invest on something really good and get 3 yards”. It was priced at $8.95 a yard down from $13.95. The guy who owns the place then told me that he is liquidating a lot of fabrics and that section was $2.99 a yard. I can not skip on a good deal so I uped my yardage to 4 yards (fabric is dark blue with tan flowers). I went back and grabbed the same print in black and got 3 yards. Then went back to pick up out another print that I was eyeing. It looks very 80’ish. Multicolor woven look and something I would in general never buy. It’s very good quality though and I know exactly what type of top I want to make with it. I only bought 2 yards. Didn’t want to buy too much. Also found out that originally it was $17.95 a yard down to $2.99. That is just crazy. I stopped myself there and bought a few more buttons. I bought a really cute gold button with rhinestones for the white top I am working on, only to find out that I needed to buy 3 of them. Boo. I guess I will be using that for something else and using the dragon flies instead.

Overall, I was satisfied with my little adventure to F&S. I didn’t really find anything there, but found another store that I will be going back to when I am back from my trip to Atlantic City and after my rent is paid.

session #15

5 Sep

Let’s see… what did I accomplish this last session? I am pretty much finished with my White layered top. Will post image tomorrow along with other finished images. I just need to sew on side of a zipper and I am done. Woo hoo.

I used the serger for the first time. Was a bit scared at first, but after about half a minute I got a hang out it and had a blast. Since my tops had many layers, I used the serger a lot. Also I used the serger for Joey’s pants which are also done. I will be making a pair for myself in a pink plaid with gold to wear around the house. I am going to skip the outer pockets. Don’t need them.

Other than that, we were late again. I helped Leyli make a bag for a present to someone. I was going to start to cut out my fabric but since the fabric is slippery and the table top is hard wood, I opted out to cut out patterns instead until Leyli was done. We stayed a bit longer, but oh well. We got what we needed done.

Next week will be my last session of this series and then I think I may take a break, or just go every other week. Not sure yet.
